Travellers in Egypt are being warned not to get caught up in demonstrations expected to take place the country today.
A second round of presidential elections will be held on June 16 and 17 and there have been calls for mass demonstrations in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and in other cities, including Alexandria and Suez, today.
Smaller demonstrations are being held in cities across Egypt.
The Foreign Office urged travellers to steer clear of large crowds, including election campaign rallies, and to follow developments on the news.
It warned that there may be “increased tension” during nelections next week. “We advise British nationals to exercise caution near polling stations on election days and in areas where demonstrations and election rallies are taking place,” it added.
The Foreign Office also warned that although petrol and gas shortages across the country had eased since last week, queues for petrol were still causing traffic jams in many cities.
