CEO Blog: My Iberia Experience to Bogota

Each time I travel, I make it a point to scrutinise every detail, stepping into the shoes of our corporate travel clients. Would I recommend the airline I flew with? Are there any tips for navigating certain airports? These questions guide my observations, allowing me to gather valuable information that helps our clients enjoy the smoothest trips possible.

For a recent business trip to Bogota in Colombia, I had the pleasure of flying business class with Iberia.

SMOOTH SAILING AT CHECK-IN

Checking in at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 was a breeze. I arrived early on a Saturday morning in mid-May and was greeted by an empty queue. This efficient start to my journey set a positive tone for the trip ahead.

LONDON TO MADRID

The flight from London to Madrid was genuinely impressive. It was a breath of fresh air to sit in a proper business class seat. It is worth noting that not all flights from London to Madrid are like this - some airlines simply block out the middle seat in an economy configuration, but this flight and plane model (which I believe was an Airbus A350, one of Iberia’s latest generation aircraft) offered a true business class experience with food service included.

KNOW YOUR AIRPORTS

Madrid’s airport is vast and bustling, with considerable distances to cover on foot. If walking long distances is a challenge, advise your dedicated booking team so they can arrange assistance for you. Navigating this airport with a tight connection can be challenging. Fortunately, the lounge in Madrid was spacious and comfortable, offering a welcome respite without feeling overcrowded.

TOUCHDOWN IN BOGOTA

The journey from Madrid to Bogota continued to impress. The aircraft was new, featuring a modern configuration of business class seats. The staff were friendly and attentive, making the long-haul flight enjoyable.

A FEW BUMPS ALONG THE WAY

The return journey didn’t quite match the outbound experience. The lounge at Bogota airport met expectations but lacked the charm of its Madrid counterpart. Whilst the flight journey from Bogota to Madrid was good, the flight from Madrid back to London featured an older business class configuration and aircraft, so it was a disappointment compared to the other three flights. A word of caution for those departing from Bogota: the airport can impose strict security checks on departing flights. This happened to us, causing a 1.5-hour delay and a mad dash for my connecting flight. While I made it, my luggage unfortunately did not.

FIRST CLASS CUSTOMER SERVICE

Despite this hiccup, Iberia's handling of the situation was commendable. By the time I had got back to London, I had received a text informing me of the status and estimated delivery of my luggage, which was delivered to my front door within 48 hours. I was not required to call the airline’s customer services; they proactively contacted me and handled the situation very well. When travelling, occasional mishaps happen that are out of our control. What truly matters is how these situations are managed. Iberia impressed me with their efficient resolution of the misplaced luggage, demonstrating a high level of customer care and responsiveness.
