The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced a partnership with both Emirates and Etihad Airways to trial the IATA Travel Pass – a digital Covid passport where passengers can share Covid-19 test results and vaccination certificates with airlines and authorities.
The IATA Travel Pass is a mobile app where passengers can check the entry requirements of their destination with regards to a pre-travel Covid test or vaccination certificate and can share their results with airlines and authorities before travel. In effect, the Travel Pass will contain the information to verify if a passenger is eligible to travel to their destination.
IATA stated that the new Travel Pass will “will keep passengers in control of their data and facilitate the sharing of their tests with airlines and authorities for travel”. It aims to offer assurance to travellers, governments, airlines and travel operators and help facilitate the safe reopening of borders.
Etihad are planning to offer the new service to passengers on selected flights from Abu Dhabi in the first quarter or 2021, whereas Emirates will implement phase 1 of the IATA Travel Pass in April where it will be available to passengers flying from Dubai.
