Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has announced that the UK will use the existing NHS app as a vaccine passport to reopen international travel.
Shapps revealed that the NHS app which is used to book general GP appointments will also be used to store Covid vaccination certificates as well as negative test results, providing a vaccine passport for overseas travel.
The Transport Secretary commented:
“It will be the NHS app that is used for people when they book appointments with the NHS and so on, to be able to show that you’ve had a vaccine or that you’ve had testing, and I’m working internationally with partners across the world to make sure that the system can be internationally recognised.”
The NHS app that will be used for the vaccine passport should not be confused with the current NHS Test and Trace app that is used to check into hospitality venues for contact tracing.
The news comes as the EU unveiled plans in March for its ‘digital green pass’ which will facilitate free movement within the EU with trials starting now.
