The UK government has revealed plans to introduce an advanced travel permit, otherwise known as an Electronic Travel Authorisation, for travellers entering the United Kingdom.
The new Electronic Travel Authorisation System (ETAS) will be a similar concept to the United States’ current system (ESTA) and the EU’s upcoming ETIAS scheme which will come into force next year.
Non-UK citizens who are entitled to visa-free short stays will need to fill in the online form before they travel. The passengers details will then be checked against security databases and will only be able to travel if cleared.
The new scheme is being introduced to help make UK borders more secure and so authorities can track the exact numbers of foreign nationals entering and leaving the country.
It is not known if the new Electronic Travel Authorisation will cost or if it will be complimentary and the new scheme isn’t expected to being until 2025.
